SYKI102 Practical studies in Community Health Care

Contents and structure

This course is a supervised clinical placement with a focus on the practice of patient-centred nursing. Students use the nursing process in their practice of nursing, treatment, and rehabilitation together with the patient, relatives, and health professionals.

This course also covers the following topics:

• Nursing procedures
• Documentation and journal systems
• The handling and calculation of medication

Norwegian week is included. The aim for this week is to introduce the students to Norwegian history, health, and welfare system. It consists of lectures and visits in the local community.

The expected study time for this module is around 300 hours, which are mostly dedicated to directly patient-oriented work.

• can use interpersonal and communicative competence when meeting with service users, patients and relatives
• can use subject knowledge of basic needs, health and illness to systematically observe, assess, implement and document appropriate nursing measures, as well as evaluate the effect of these and make adjustments as necessary
• can use knowledge of professional ethics guidelines and relevant government requirements in their provision of services
• caninteract with other health professionals
• can reflect on professional, ethical and legal issues in line with relevant legislation and guidelines, and adjust their practice in the course of their provision of services
• can reflect on ethical and legal problems through the use of technology and digital solutions
• can find, assess and refer to subject knowledge and relevant results from research and development work
• can identify and assess risk factors associated with the individual
• masters how to implement infection control measures to prevent the spread of unwanted microbes
• masters mapping, assessment and documentation tools in their nursing practice

Competence

The student...

• can organise and manage their own work
• can plan and implement sound drug calculations and participate in medication handling under supervision
• can plan and implement communication and interaction with patients based on respect, cooperation and integrity
• can convey key subject matter such as theories, problems and solutions, both orally and in writing
• can convey opinions and share experiences with others in the field, both orally and in writing, and through this contribute to the development of best practice

Entry requirements

• Student at a partner institution which Bachelor of Nursing at HVL have an agreement with
• 60 ECTSs within nursing studies
• Placement experiences: at least one period
• Minimum level B2 in English (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, CEFR)
• Negative MRSA testing: You will not be allowed to start clinical placement if the test is positive for MRSA so we advice you to take a test before you leave for Norway. You will also be tested in Norway before you start your placement - Information about testing for tuberculosis and MRSA

Compulsory learning activities

At least 80 % attendance at Norwegian Week. The aim for this week is to introduce the students to Norwegian history, health, and welfare system. It consists of lectures and visits in the local community.

The course requirements must be fulfilled for the practical placement to be assessed

Assessment

Clinical placements are assessed on a pass/not pass basis after a final assessment of the student’s performance during their clinical placement.

To pass their placements, students must have reached their learning outcomes and met the requirement of 90% participation in the course.

Resitting placements: If a student does not pass their placement, they can complete the placement period next time the course is offered.
