Course description for academic year 2017/2018

Contents and structure

The course has the following main components: basic, experience-based training in performing, listening and creative activities with emphasis on listening, beginner education in music and an introduction to music as a school subject as it is designed for years 1-7 in the current curriculum.

 

The course will emphasise the creation of good connections between the student's own musical and artistic development and didactic competence in planning, implementation and reflection on music education in years 1-7. The course shall give the student competency in planning and implementing various projects in years 1-7. Music history and disciplinary didactics will be central in the course, with a special focus on the key area of listening.

Knowledge

The candidate:

  • Has knowledge about the music subject's history and role in society, curricula in the subject and curricular history.
  • Has basic knowledge of music from different traditions, genres and periods of music history
  • Has knowledge about the music teacher as a leader and facilitator of music education in years 1-7, with a focus on the key area of listening
  • Has knowledge about learning and aesthetic learning processes related to beginner education in music
  • Has knowledge about children's musical development, forms of expression, creativity and identity, and factors influencing these
  • Has knowledge about the characteristics of a diverse and inclusive learning environment and community for musical learning for years 1-7
  • Has knowledge about the relationship between music and emotional and social competencies

 

Skills:

The candidate is able to:

  • Use didactic tools in a relevant manner in practice
  • Listen actively and reflectively to a representative selection of music from different genres and historical periods
  • Facilitate varied music activities for years 1-7, with a focus on listening
  • Master different approaches to beginner education and progress in music
  • Use and assess varied forms of work, methods and assessments for music as a school subject in years 1-7
  • Lead processes in listening and song for pupils in years 1-7
  • Plan and implement tailored music education for pupils with different backgrounds, aptitudes and interests

The candidate:

  • Can plan, implement and assess varied music activities in years 1-7
  • Can activate and stimulate the pupils' ability to create, experience and express music
  • Is able to reflect upon the relationship between the goals and contents of the music subject, other subject areas and the overall curriculum for years 1-7
  • Can reflect on and discuss the role of music in a diverse society
  • Can assess and analyse music with a starting point in aesthetics and cultural theory

Teaching and work forms

The forms of work in the course will vary between practical creative work, lectures, project and group work, performances and supervision. Teaching will take place in groups where appropriate.
