Contents and structure
- capabilities and limitations of common technology systems on board, and working with these systems
- fault-finding, analysis of faults and failures, testing and inspection
- basic and advanced safety and security
- introduction to automation, new developments and trends
- capabilities and limitations of automation, and levels of autonomy
- principles for integration of new systems, commissioning, influencing design and providing input
- frameworks and regulations, management and administration related to maritime IT
Learning Outcome
Knowledge
- Broad knowledge of onboard ICT systems, including environmental requirements.
- Identify and understand the use of common technology systems on board (OT and generic ICT). Understand the purpose of common IT systems found on board (e.g. network switches, routers, file and email servers)
- Understand the principles behind commissioning and testing.
- Demonstrate a clear understanding of common security principles and how to avoid common risks of attacks and security threats
- Understand methods (also called levels) of automation/ autonomy.
- Be aware of capabilities and limitations of automation
- Be aware of new trends such as big data, smart ships, block chain.
- Understand company policies and why they are important.
- Have in-depth insight into managerial level tasks such as asset management, contracts, service agreements, ISO 20 000 etc.
Skill
- Identify common systems on board (OT and generic ICT) and grasp the basics of installation
- Use help options and remote assistance basics
- Manage electronic communication, email and social media.
- Investigate, and prioritise, when parts of system are not working
- Confirm correct performance after a change has been made (version control).
- Demonstrate how malware can infect computer systems and what you can do to avoid it. Steps that are taken for response & recovery.
- Understand and make use of basic threat management.
- Understand the importance of adhering to and enforce code of conduct for BYOD (bring your own devices).
Competence
- Discuss risk management and how technology risks may be incorporated into the ISM requirements
- Take part in influencing design stages and providing input and feedback for updates, retrofits and new builds
- Locate and adhere to regulatory frameworks relevant to ship cyber security
- Be aware of new trends and innovations in maritime technology

Recommended previous knowledge
The course is part of a specially arranged transitional arrangement from a 2-year maritime technical vocational college to a bachelor. Content and structure are based on this premise, as well as requests from representatives from the maritime industry.
Teaching methods
Session-based teaching. Lectures, flipped classroom, practical tasks and self-studies.
Compulsory learning activities
One poster/presentation.
Assessment
Semester assignment.
Grade A-F.
