BIO302 Advanced methodology in biomedical laboratory science

Course description for academic year 2021/2022

Contents and structure

BIO302 - Advanced methodology in biomedical analysis is a course that gives knowledge on new and advances technology and methodology in medical laboratory analysis. Students are trained in searching relevant literature and to present scientific papers. Additionally, students training includes evaluating the quality and use of new methodology in biomedical analysis.

The course includes following subjects:

  • Analysis of nucleic acids in genomics and genetics, like DNA micro arrays, next generation sequencing (NGS), as well as analysis of RNA and micro RNAs (3 study points)
  • Chromatography and mass spectrometry with examples from fields like proteomics, metabolomics, pharmacology and micro biology (3 study points)
  • Stem cell technology (1 study point)
  • Biobanking (1 study point)
  • Microscopy and image analysis (1 study point)
  • Immunological techniques, including flow cytometry and mass cytometry (1 study point)

Learning Outcome

After fulfilling this course, students are able to:

Knowledge:

  • Present new technology and methodology in biomedical laboratory analysis.
  • Explain the principle of selected, advanced methods, instruments and equipment in biomedical laboratory analysis.

Skills:

  • Evaluate the usage, limitations and advantage of different analysis.
  • Contributing in development of medical laboratory science by contributing in discussions on choice of methodology, as well as developing and improving existing analysis.

General competence:

  • Find relevant scientific literature to acquire information on medical laboratory analysis.
  • Present and inform about different medical laboratory analysis.

Entry requirements

Bachelor in biomedical laboratory science or corresponding competence in medical laboratory analysis.

Teaching methods

The learning platform Canvas is used in this course.

Teaching is done as two one week-long seminars. The students work independently between the seminars.

During the seminars, teachers, guest lectures and students will give oral presentations. Guided tours in laboratories and demonstrations on relevant equipment and instruments, can be organized.

Students prepare their presentations between seminars.

Student activities are:

  • Preparing and performing presentations at seminars.
  • Written taskss, both individually and in groups.
  • Laboratory guided tours and excursions.

Students get feedback and supervision on their presentations and written works.

Compulsory learning activities

The following assignments must be finished at given time points and approved before the students can be finally examined:

  • 2 presentations on different subject
  • 3 submitted exercises on different subjects. All written work are submitted by students on Canvas before given deadlines.

Approved assignments are valid for three years after approval.

Assessment

Oral examination, 30 minutes.

Time and place for the examination will be announced at Studentweb and digital assessment system.

Grading scale is A-F where F is fail.
