Course description for academic year 2023/2024

Contents and structure

Linguistics 2 is an independent course building on Linguistics 1. In grammar, there is a focus on more complex syntactic structures, with special attention given to word order and dependent clauses. Selected word classes (both functional and lexical) will be discussed in detail. Linguistics 2 also gives further insight into English phonetics, including word and sentence stress as well as intonation. The course gives an introduction to different varieties of English. In addition, there will be a focus on the history of the English language, including English as a global language. Finally, there is an increased emphasis on academic writing in the course.

Recommended previous knowledge

ENG101 Linguistics 1 or equivalent.

Teaching methods

Teaching will consist of lectures, seminars, group work and individual work. The course requires systematic work with reading, tasks and exercises, and active participation in class. English is both the target language and the language of instruction, and all learning activities are in English. This offers invaluable language practice, and through active involvement in learning activities students will apply both language skills and knowledge of course content. The learning platform Canvas will be used to relay information, communicate with students and provide feedback on student work.

The compulsory learning activities will be given in the semester plan. Students are required to comply with requirements and deadlines.

Compulsory learning activities must be approved in order for the student to be allowed to sit the exam. If the compulsory learning activities are not approved, students will have one additional attempt, but a maximum of two attempts per compulsory learning activity per semester.

Approved compulsory learning activities are valid three semesters following the approval.

Assessment

Semester paper (2000-2500 words).

The grading scale used is A to F. Grade A is the highest possible grade on the grading scale, grade F is a fail.

It is possible to submit an improved version of the semester paper in the following semester. Improving the semester paper with the same research question is only allowed once. After that, a new semester paper must be written.
