ELE109 Instrumentation and Data Networks

Course description for academic year 2018/2019

Contents and structure

As the title indicates, the subject holds two modules, instrumentation and data networks respectively.

Within the instrumentation module, the subjects are accuracy, noise, dynamic characteristics, and reliability in measurement systems. Furthermore, sensing elements, signal adaptation, signal processing, and data presentation are covered. Finally, specialized measurement systems, such as temperature gauges, flow meters, optical measurement systems, and intrinsically safe systems are covered.

The module "computer networks" covers fundamental principles, such as transmission medium, modulation techniques, the OSI model, network components and communication protocols. Finally, the module reviews principles of TCP/IP-based data networks and various industrial networks, such as Profibus and Modbus.

  • Choice of sensors, signal processing, transmission and signal presentation
  • Instrumentation examples, control systems and process controllers
  • Correction elements
  • System models and transfer functions
  • Communication principles and concepts
  • Standardization and the OSI-model
  • Copper cables, fiber optics and wireless technologies
  • Overview of industrial data networks, RS232 and RS485
  • TCP/IP, industrial Ethernets, Modbus, Profibus and HART

Learning Outcome

By completion of this course, the students has gained the following learning outcome:

 

Knowledge:

  • The candidate has knowledge of detection of base units and derived units. The candidate has gained knowledge of elements in control loops and the role of instrumentation involved in such loops.
  • The candidate has knowledge of accuracy and reliability, signal transmission and signal processing, technical safety, system response and process controllers.
  • The candidate has a general knowledge of data networks with special focus on TCP/IP and intelligent transmitters and fieldbuses.

 

Skills

  • Ability to evaluate appropriateness, accuracy and reliability in selecting measurement instruments
  • Ability to evaluate appropriateness of different industrial data networks
  • Ability to set up an TCP/IP based network

 

General competence

  • To work in groups and individually in technical projects
  • Use computers for measurement and control purposes

Recommended previous knowledge

Mathematics:

  • MAT100 and MAT106 or similar

Electric Circuits:

  • ELE100 and ELE101 or similar

Teaching methods

Lectures, laboratory and exercises.

Compulsory learning activities

Four mandatory assignments of which four must be approved

Threee laboratory exercises. Mandatory attendance at laboratory exercises.

Valid mandatory assignments are valid in 3 semesters following approval.

Assessment

4 hours written exam. The grading scale used is A to F. Grade A is the highest passing grade in the grading scale, grade F is a fail.
