Course description for academic year 2020/2021

Contents and structure

The subject introduces measurement systems in general, and introduces systems where instrumentation plays an important role. The subject consists of seven modules of different weight, i.e. system overview, sensor techniques, actuators, signal processing, sognal transmission, fieldbuses and electronic safety.

  • System overview
    • The module aims to give an understanding of systems where measurements are central, such as sequential and linear regulation systems. System reliability and symbols in system diagrams are covered.
  • Sensors techniques
    • The module covers different techniques for measuring most quantities within the SI-systems base quantities and derived quantities.
  • Actuators
    • The module covers different techniques for manipulating system behaviour.
  • Signal processing
    • The module covers techniques for preparing measures signals for the next step in a process. It also covers techniques for improving signal quality.
  • Signal transmission
    • This module covers basic techniques for the transfer of electrical signals in an industrial perspective.
  • Fieldbuses
    • This module discuss communication between different electronic elements in an industrial network structure.
  • Safety
    • This module covers techniques for protecting electronic equipment from electrical and mechanical stress, as well as the use of instrumentation to establish processes less prone to hazards.

Practical work is a central part of the course

Learning Outcome

Knowledge

  • The candidate has knowledge about sensors and actuators on a component level and in a system perspective

Skills

  • Know the main components of a measurement system
  • Understand sensors and actuators role in a regulation system
  • Being able to calculate the MTBF on a component and on a system level
  • Being able to understand and draw a P&ID
  • Know different measurement principles for position, movement, proximity, force, torque, mass, temperature, light intensity, pressure, flow and level
  • Being able to calculate the expected response from a number of sensors.
  • Know different process manipulators such as valves, heaters, coolers and servo motors
  • Know different transmitters, such as speakers, LED, laser and piezo crystals
  • Being able to calculate SNR, and consider different techniques for noise reduction
  • Know the field of use and function of different AD and DA converters
  • Know the three transmission media, copper, fibre optic and wireless, as well as understanding and being able to calculate a link budget
  • Know the principles for analogue and digital transmission
  • Understand the difference between commercial and industrial data networks
  • Being able to describe the main attributes of selected fieldbuses
  • Understand intrinsic safety and hazard classification
  • Understand labelling for ingress protection

General competence

  • The candidate is able to communicate information linked to theories, issues and solutions within electrical professions

Lectures, practical exercises and assignments

Compulsory learning activities

  • 6 laboratory exercises with compulsory attendance to the laboratory
  • 3 assignments

Valid mandatory assignments are valid in 3 semesters following approval.

Assessment

Written exam on campus, 4 hours. Time and place for the exam will be announced on the studentweb

Grades from A to F, where F is fail
