Start-up: Introduction to the course. At the beginning of the semester, we check that all have approved health certificates, safety courses, passports etc. Information about the practical period. The Webcadet programme is reviewed. Contact information is exchanged between student and shipping company.

Practice periode: The practice period is carried out on board selected vessels. Departure date and return date may vary from student to student, but all students have between 6 to 8 weeks on board the vessel. In addition to normal training and introduction on board, the students work through the Webcadet with the selected questions. These questions were reviewed during the start-up. The student will be followed up by an assessor on board the vessel and the contact person at HVL. During this period, the student will also work with the portfolio elements.

Notice: The cource is based on app. 2 month practical training onboard a ship. During this time the student is hired as student, but he/she gets the time onboard approved as required sailing time in relation to applications for a deck officer certificate.

On board, the student will mainly work in an international environment. On some vessels the student can work with one or more Norwegians, while on others the student will be the only Norwegian on board. This depends on which vessels the shipping companies have at their disposal. This means that the student must communicate in English, which on many ships is the working language. The student must relate to and interact with colleagues with different nationalities and cultural backgrounds, and must be aware of how he/she communicates and acts.
