English | One Year

The one-year study in English is open for incoming students, taking 30 (one semester, autumn or spring) or 60 (two semesters) study points at HVL.

Through the study programme you will get insight into language, literature, history and society in the English-speaking world, and improve your own language and text competence.

The language of instruction is English. The one-year study in English can be a part of a bachelor programme and is a basis for further English studies. Read more about the alternatives in the study plan.

How the Teaching is Organized

The English Annual Study consists of four subjects, with each subject worth 15 credits. Two subjects will be completed in the fall semester and two subjects in the spring semester:

ENG501: Introduction to English Linguistics
ENG601: Introduction to English Literature, History, and Culture
ENG701: Introduction to English Linguistics 2
ENG801: English Literature, History, and Culture 2

Attendance: The study program, including the four subjects, is fully digital. This also applies to mandatory learning activities and exams. There is no need for physical attendance on campus.

Each subject is divided into four modules, with each module consisting of approximately four teaching sessions. The last teaching session for each module is synchronous and comprises a digital lecture and meeting where students can interact with each other and receive feedback from the lecturer. This means that students are required to participate in four teaching sessions per subject, totaling 16 sessions. These synchronous teaching sessions take place during daytime. All other teaching sessions are asynchronous and can be completed at the student's own pace, within the time limits for each module.

Each subject lasts about eight weeks, with each of the four modules lasting approximately two weeks.

Exams and Assessment: Evaluation consists of mandatory learning activities carried out by students throughout the subject and included in a learning portfolio. The assessment of the learning portfolio will be approved/not approved. The final exam varies depending on the subject; for example, ENG501 has an oral exam. Since the course is 100% online, there are no exams on campus.

It should be noted that this study program is online-based and not a MOOC (Massive Open Online Course). In addition to the asynchronous teaching and individual learning work that each student can complete at their own pace, there will be synchronous teaching with interaction among students and lecturers. There will be specific teaching times to adhere to, and there will be set deadlines for mandatory learning activities and exams.
