Stord and the region

Being a student at Stord campus is to live in a great mix of town and countryside. The island of Stord offers hiking, boating with the opportunity to fish in both sea and fresh water, biking, skiing and much more. The scenery is beautiful and provides an excellent base for experiencing mountains, fjords, beaches and the sea. Not all universities have their own beach, park, student house, gym, sports arena and soccer field, but you will find all of this at Stord campus. And if you fancy a game of golf, the golf course is only 500 metres away.

The town of Leirvik is the centre in the region Sunnhordlandand here you will find all you need: restaurants, shops, a cinema and a variety of cultural and sports activities. In the region of Sunnhordland, the wild sea meets majestic mountainsides and waterfalls, icy glaciers and exposed skerries. There are lots of nature and cultural experiences and activities on offer in these spectacular surroundings.

Sunnhordland is known for its fascinating island and fjord kingdom. There are thousands of large and small islands in the region – all of them marked by the friendly and hospitable character of the people of Sunnhordland. Norway's second longest fjord – the Hardangerfjord – starts in Sunnhordland. This 179-km-long fjord, often called the "Queen of the Norwegian fjords", also contributes to the distinctive character of the region.

Not far away from Stord island you may explore the deep glacial fissures and blue ice of Folgefonna , Norway's third largest glacier, together with an experienced glacier guide. Folgefonna glacier walk is one of Norway's historical walking routes, and the tour across the dramatic icy element has attracted tourists for over 200 years. Start your glacier experience with a kayaking adventure and paddle your way right up to the magnificent icefall at Møsevassbreen glacier at the southern end of Folgefonna.

Throughout the year the island and fjord kingdom of Sunnhordland offer several festivals and cultural events. You can experience a concert on top of a mountain, see some of the best blues musicians in the world or listen to local bands and artists in local pubs. There's something for everyone!
