A master's that gives you knowledge of everything at sea

Amirhossein is keenly interested in the field of offshore wind turbines. He thinks Haugesund and western Norway is a beautiful place to study, and that the area offers many unique opportunities in the maritime industry.

Name: Amirhossein Yousefi Choubari
From: Iran
Studying: Maritime Operations Master's degree program
Place of study: HVL campus Haugesund

With the master programme in maritime operations you acquire advanced knowledge within different aspects of maritime operations. Amirhossein has a background in mechanical engineering, and decided to apply for the Master's degree program in Haugesund and Leer. Currently he is working on his thesis about the mooring systems of floating wind turbines for his master’s degree in Maritime operations.

The first semester of study is mandatory in Haugesund while the second semester is mandatory in Leer. In the second year of study, you deepen yourself in one of the profiles offered by the two institutions. Amirhossein chose the profile that HVL offers in Haugesund in the second year, maritime technology and management.

- Due to my interest in this country and my future career, Norway is one of the leading countries in this field.

A good view of each part of marine technology

- What do you learn in this master’s degree program Maritime Operations?

- A Master of Science in maritime operations is a mixture of studying various fields. You will learn about anything in the sea. The most interesting part of this field is that it is somehow more relevant to industry than academic-based. In this field, you will learn about subsea systems, maritime operations, management, subsea platforms, AUV systems, offshore wind turbines, and various types of ships. Totally, you will become familiar with various marine technologies.

Relevant seminars, northern light and table tennis

Amirhossein thinks there are many good reasons to live in Vestlandet and Haugesund.

- I like all parts of Norway because each part has its own unique beauty, and the western part of Norway in particular. Haugesund has lots of good traits that can be perfect for students.

He summarizes some of the reasons why he likes to study and live in Haugesund.

- House rent is lower than in some large cities. There is a mild climate in which we do not have extreme weather conditions in winter because rainy days remains moderate. Stavanger and Haugesund are two main cities where good seminars relevant to oil, gas, maritime, renewable energy, etc. will be held. And there is an opportunity for students from universities to take part in these seminars by enrolling, or in some cases, by doing voluntary jobs. So, they can learn there, try to get familiar with various companies, make new friends, and, in some cases, receive an invitation for an interview for their future jobs.

He also points out that the nature and the local environment offers many great experiences

- The chances are that during autumn or winter, you can see northern light from Haugesund. I think for everybody who comes to Norway to see this beautiful scenery, it can be amazing, as I saw it in my first year in Norway. The beautiful nature in or around Haugesund, which is all accessible by hiking and walking, is recommended to those who are athletes. Most houses are directly in touch with nature; on some days, you can see cute deer from your room window, which was common to me.

Amirhossein is also active in the local table tennis club in Haugesund, and is happy about this opportunity.

- Because of my ability in table tennis, I could voluntarily work as a table tennis coach assistant at Haugesund table tennis club, and I am a member of this club as a player. So, it was a great opportunity to develop my friend network in Norway, get familiar with their personalities and cultures, and get socialized.

Amirhossein is an active table tennis player.

Dreams of working with offshore wind turbines

- What do you dream of working with after your studies?

- I am keenly interested in the field of offshore wind turbines. Currently, I am working on my thesis about the mooring systems of floating wind turbines. This is a new field of green and peaceful technology that is environmentally friendly, so I like to pursue my professional career in this field and keep myself up to date even after education.
