University of California at Berkeley was founded in 1868, and has more than 40,000 students, including 1300 international students from 74 different countries. Berkeley is located in San Francisco and is ranked among the world’s top 10. It is considered one of the best universities in the United States.
The Berkeley International Study Program (BISP) was established to enable foreign students to study at Berkeley for one semester. HVL has an agreement with BISP in sociology, which means that as a student at HVL, you can take class at the Department of Sociology. There are many interesting subjects in the field of economics and administration that might appeal to HVL students.
Languages
Classes will be held in English.
UC Berkeley's International Study Program (BISP) offers Norwegian students dispensation from the language requirements, and therefore does not require any special language skills.
Fee
You will receive the same financial support from the State Educational Loan Fund, Norway as for studies in Norway, in addition to a travel grant. You must pay a semester fee to HVL in order to receive a loan and grant from the State Educational Loan Fund, Norway during the exchange period.

Course approval
In order to apply for a student exchange programme, your application must first be approved by the study programme of your faculty. An approved application means that you have been given an academic pre-approval for the course or traineeship you will be doing abroad. The academic pre-approval specifies what you will be doing while you are on an exchange programme and confirms these activities will be fully approved as part of your education plan at HVL.
