HVL granted membership in the IAMU

Western Norway University of Applied Sciences, Department of maritime studies has been granted membership in The International Association of Maritime Universities (IAMU).

«We are truly delighted to have been granted this membership,» says Johanne Marie Trovåg, head of the department and continues, «Now we have an arena for cooperation on development of maritime education and training as well as research projects on a global scale.»

IAMU is a global network of leading maritime universities providing Maritime Education and Training (MET) of seafarers for the global shipping industry. The Association was created in 1999 by a group of maritime universities from across the world as a non-profit organization (source: IAMU).

IAMU carried out a site visit to HVL in March 2018, where the representative was thoroughly briefed about our study programs and the structure of the University, and made a visit to our main teaching arena, the simulators. At the subsequent International Executive Board (IEB) meeting held in Barcelona, Spain on the 19th of April 2018, our application was accepted.

«This is an important step for us. I in my previous roles I have come to appreciate the IAMU network including the research collaboration, but also the student activities for our future seafarers,» says professor Margareta Lützhöft. The leader of Marsafe Research program Helle Oltedal agrees, «We look forward to participate in this global network, which is a great opportunity to develop even better education and research programs.»
