Project summary
The proportion of women with an immigrant background giving birth in Norway is increasing. Research shows that certain groups, depending on country of birth and migration-related factors, have a higher risk of complications such as stillbirth and preterm birth. It can be challenging for clinicians to keep track of which groups this applies to. To address this need, we have developed PreGO (Pregnant Women on the Go), a digital clinical decision-support tool designed to assist midwives, general practitioners, and specialist healthcare services in risk assessment of pregnant women with an immigrant background in Norway. PreGO is developed using data from 2 million births in the Medical Birth Registry of Norway (MBRN), linked with migration and socioeconomic data from Statistics Norway (SSB) for the period 1990–2021. The tool presents risks for selected outcomes and provides individual estimates based on prediction models. A prototype was completed in spring 2025. Pilot testing is being conducted in collaboration with municipal midwives in Bergen, Øygarden, Alver, and Bjørnafjorden, as well as physicians at the Centre for Migration Health in Bergen. Project objectives: To strengthen precise, evidence-based risk assessment in antenatal care and to enhance clinicians’ multicultural competence. The overarching goal is equitable healthcare services and fewer adverse pregnancy outcomes. PreGO is a subproject of a larger migration research project (REK South-East reference: 2014/1278). The main project underwent a data protection impact assessment in 2019 (DPIA, reference 130853), most recently updated in 2025. On behalf of the steering committee, Vestlandets Innovation Company (VIS) has taken over the commercial rights. VIS works to connect research, industry, and societal needs. The project is interprofessional and includes both staff and students at different levels across institutes at HVL. The project has an interdisciplinary advisory body that also incorporates an important user perspective. You can read more about the project in the Stiftelsen Dam project library.
