Project summary
The aim of this qualitative study was to explore the experiences of nurses in mental health services in Norway regarding the follow-up they have received after being exposed to workplace violence. A selection of six nurses with variated experience employed at psychiatric wards, participated in semi-structured interviews. The dataanalyses method systematic text condensation uncovered four themes: 1) The need to be “picked up and packed in”, 2) The expectation of a high tolerance, 3) Trivialization of the injurys repercussions and 4) The burden of standing up for yourself. All the informants experienced that the incidents of violence was trivialized, and that they didn’t get the follow-up they needed. The results from the study indicates that the wards should secure measures to help and support the exposed employees.
