Project summary

In Norway, one in ten will develop breast cancer during her life corresponding to 3324 in 2014.  New therapies have led to more women with breast cancer are cured. Many develop new health problems caused by the disease and/or treatment and get prolonged physical and psychological ailments. Studies show that coping abilities, social resources and psychological reactions at diagnosis and treatment has impact on  their immediate emotional distress and well-being and their long-term adjustment. The purpose of this qualitative follow-up study was to describe women’s individual coping experiences and reflections after primary breast cancer surgery. Using a qualitative descriptive design, we have collected data through individual interviews with women at a Norwegian university hospital one and nine years post-surgery. More information about women’s perspectives regarding individual coping experiences and reflections is important if we are to facilitate psychological well-being across the breast cancer trajectory.
