Project period
January 2018 - March 2022
Project summary
This research investigates the mental model employed by seafarers when interacting with electronic navigation systems to perform navigation duties, particularly in terms of icon interpretation and perception of groups of content. The objective is to utilize user input to develop highly usable interfaces for marine navigation systems and advance the application of human-centered design in the maritime domain.
Method
To understand how seafarers interpret icons and symbols on navigation displays, the method employed is semi-structured interviews.
To understand how seafarers categorise and group information available from navigation equipment, the method employed is card-sorting.
