Ensuring a Competent and sustainable workforce of Midwives in Norway (CompMid)

A project addressing the challenge of retaining experienced and competent midwives in maternity care and ensuring high-quality clinical training for midwife students.

The research project has been awarded 12 million kroner from the Research Council of Norway. The project is led by researchers at Western Norway Universty of Applied Sciences (HVL). Researchers from OsloMet, the University of Bergen, and the Karolinska Institute in Sweden are also participating in the project.

  • We investigate midwife students’ experiences of Norwegian midwifery education, focusing on their clinical competencies at graduation and their empowerment and burnout one year later.

  • Additionally, we examine work-related intentions among midwives, along with empowerment levels, burnout, and the risk factors associated with leaving clinical work.

  • Our research also assesses midwives’ shift work patterns, work-related experiences, and self-reported sickness absence, supported by payroll data from the Norwegian Working Hour Registry for hospital workers.

  • Furthermore, we develop and evaluate digital learning tools aimed at improving clinical competencies for both midwives and midwife students.

  • Lastly, we explore stakeholders’ (including midwives, leaders, economists, politicians, and other stakeholders in the Norwegian health regions) suggestions on ensuring access to a clinically competent workforce of midwives in Norway.
