Course description for academic year 2018/2019

Contents and structure

The course provides thorough knowledge of the requirements regarding systematic health, safety and environment (HSE) work, and how HSE work can and should be organised and practiced in technology enterprises based on the requirements of the Working Environment Act. The course will focus on HSE as an important responsibility within technology management. A key topic will be HSE work as part of corporate social responsibility (CSR) of technology enterprises. The interaction between relevant actors and processes in HSE work will be emphasized, as well as important HSE challenges for technology enterprises in the working life of today. The course will emphasize how cooperation in HSE work can form basis for innovation in enterprises. The Norwegian model of labour relations and its traditions will be the basis for analysing HSE work in an international working life context.

Learning Outcome

After finishing the course the student:

  • Has advanced knowledge of the Norwegian model of labour relations.
  • Has thorough understanding of the connection between technology management and HSE management.
  • Has thorough knowledge of the Working Environment Act and the requirements regarding systematic health, environment and safety work.
  • Has insight into the responsibilities and tasks of different actors in HSE work.
  • Has thorough knowledge of best practices within HSE work.

After finishing the course the student can:

  • Identify and analyse HSE challenges in technology enterprises.
  • Apply the Working Environment Act and Internal Control Regulations in practical HSE work.
  • Cooperate with relevant actors in HSE work.

After finishing the course the student:

  • Can apply his/her knowledge and skills to improve HSE processes in technology enterprises.
  • Can analyze and communicate challenges in HSE work in an international working life context.
  • Know the importance of HSE work as part of the corporate social responsibility (CSR) of technology enterprises.
  • Can identify and utilize the potential for innovation in systematic HSE work.

Entry requirements

No formal requirements.

Teaching methods

The course is based upon lectures, discussions, presentations and both individual and group based assignments. Guest lectures will be provided when needed.

Compulsory learning activities

None

Assessment

Exam in two parts:

  1. One group assignment (40% of the final assessment).
  2. One individual assignment (60% of the final assessment).

Passed assignments are valid for the examination semester and 3 following semesters.

Grading scale is A-F where F is fail

Both parts of the exam must get a passing grade in order to get a final grade for the course.
