# MA415 Elementary Calculus

## Course description for academic year 2023/2024

### Contents and structure

MA415 is the first of two courses in mathematics developed for the bachelor program in Renewable Energy. Together, the two courses provide the mathematical background needed for the technological courses in the program. MA415 gives an introduction to geometry, trigonometry and elementary calculus and provides an understanding of how mathematical methods and models are integrated in problems within renewable energy.

### Learning Outcome

The course provides an introduction to mathematics relevant to solve problems within renewable energy.

**Knowledge **

The student has

- knowledge of area and volume of relevant geometric shapes
- knowledge of trigonometrical identities and vectors
- knowledge of solving methods for linear and quadratic equations
- knowledge of the characteristics of elementary functions such as polynomial functions exponential functions and trigonometric functions
- knowledge of derivation and integration of elementary functions

**Skills **

The student can

- handle elementary mathematical problems within renewable energy
- analyse elementary functions with one variable

**Competence **

The student

- knows relevant mathematical methods and can use these to solve practical problems within renewable energy
- can understand and analyse elementary mathematical models

Lectures, discussions, assignments and exercises.

### Compulsory learning activities

Three (3) written assignments connected to the course's mathematical themes. Three (3) of three (3) assignments must be approved before one may take the exam.

### Assessment

Written school examination, 4 hours.

Grading scale A-F, where F represents a fail.
