MSB110 Theory and Practice of Management, Ethics and Sustainability

Course description for academic year 2024/2025

Contents and structure

The knowledge contents of this course cover theories and practices of management and ethics i.e., organization and management narratives from the perspective of technological innovation, knowledge management and ethics. This course will also highlight on the core issues of organization’s design, change and effectiveness in changing technological and global environment, managing diversity, as well as sustainable corporate sustainability (SCR) strategies, motivating employees for ethical and responsive behaviour - core values of organization and management in the 21st century. New insights relevant for business organization and management in the era of technological revolution will also be discusses, such as - the management skills to lead virtual networked organizations; organization and management strategies for sustainability/ environment friendly business activities. This course will be organized in the form of seminars to provide students the opportunity to reflect on their personal experiences in reading chapters and articles from the curriculum. Students are expected to participate extensively with presentations and discussions in each seminar session. Students are also required to submit one written research project in group (semesteroppgave). The course gives 5 ECT on management and organisation and 5 ECT on ethics and sustanability.

The course is a part of Master of Science in Business (MSB) - profile Campus Bergen: Management and innovation.

Learning Outcome

Knowledge

Upon completion of this course students will have advanced knowledge of:

• Principles, practices, and concepts of organization and management

• Theories of organization, leadership, decision making and management in business and public sectors

• Theories and models of sustainable corporate responsibility (SCR) and ethics in business

• Knowledge production and management in professional organisations

• Principles for business ethics, corporate social responsibility (CSR) for markets and regulations

Skills

After completion of this course students will be able to:

• Apply concepts and theories on management and organization in analysis of cases and projects

• Collect data with for conducting critical research on organizations and management in private, public, and civic sectors

• Analyze an organization with respect to its structure, culture, human resources management, innovation capacity and management from ethical and effectiveness perspectives

• Analyze and suggest instruments for ethical management practice and sustainable leadership in organizations

• Use sustainable corporate responsibility (SCR) skills in doing jobs as part of a management team.

General Competence

After completion of this course students will be competent to:

• Undertake consultancy works in the areas of organization and management in the era of new technology

• Communicate relevant topics of management and SCR/CSR with both specialists and non-specialists

• Know when further knowledge and expertise is necessary in an organization, and from where it can be found in the changing global and technological environments

• Know relevant conditions under which SCR is important and under which conditions other variables or explanations should be addressed

Teaching methods

Teaching and learning methods will be a mixture of traditional lectures, class discussions, case analysis and practical seminars (company presentations). Self-study is important in order to benefit from course readings and assignments. The course may include visits to relevant organizations.

Compulsory learning activities

a) Students are required to review two articles/book chapters (one on management and other on ethics and sustainability topic) and present orally the summary of those articles/book chapters and submit in written before they may take the examination;

b) Students are required to present the outline of their group research project (semesteroppgave) orally and submit in written before they may take the examination

Assessment

• Written school examination with 6 hours duration. This written examination accounts for 60% of the final grade.

• One research report in group (semester oppgave) combining and highlighting on both parts (management and ethics) account for 40% of the final grade.

• Grading scale is A-F, where F is a fail grade. Students must secure a passing grade in both parts i.e. written school examination and their group semesteroppgave.
