EVN1010 Challenges for the Maritime industry with respect to environment and climate

Course description for academic year 2024/2025

Contents and structure

15 teaching hours with homework (simple) and the opportunity to take an exam

1st block, 2 hours:

  • New tasks for the maritime industry (choice of fuels that do not pollute, offshore winds, fish cages far out to sea, fishing in polar regions, seabed minerals, new standards)
  • The safety associated with the new challenges (personnel transfer, search and rescue, rescue equipment, environmental damage)
  • Homework

2nd block, 2 hours:

  • Waves and ship movements
  • Modern vessels (hull, movements)
  • Homework

3rd block, 2 hours:

  • Modern vessels (discussion of alternative fuels)
  • Need for competence to operate modern vessels
  • Homework

4th block, 2 hours:

  • Offshore wind and sustainability (influence on fishing and shipping)
  • Construction and installation of offshore wind power plants
  • Homework

5th block, 2 hours:

  • Offshore fish cages and sustainability (safety against escape of fish, safety for personnel)
  • Operation of fish cages far out to sea
  • Homework

6th block, 2 hours:

  • Minerals on the seabed and sustainability (costs, pollution)
  • Access to seabed minerals
  • Homework

7th block, 3 hours:

  • Cyber-attacks and security
  • The role of the authorities (class or self-control)
  • Summary of the course

Learning Outcome

Knowledge The students shall have knowledge regarding the challenges posed to the maritime industry with regard to the environment and climate to an extent that they can make strategical decisions on actvities relevant to them.

Skills The students must have sufficient knowledge so that they can participate in a fact-based discussion on strategical issues related to the topic.

General competency The students shall have general competence to understand the challenges posed to the maritime industry with regard to the environment and climate.

Entry requirements

Study competence based on having obtained high school diploma

Teaching methods

Teaching consists of webinars. There will be lectures where students can ask questions and get answers directly. In addition, interaction in a common digital learning platform and one-to-one communication. Simplified homework to be discussed in class.

Compulsory learning activities

The student receives a diploma of attendance if three homework assignments have been answered satisfactorily.

In order to sit for the exam, three homework assignments must also be answered satisfactorily.

Assessment

Written individual home exam (not compulsory) - 4 hours.

Grade: pass / not pass
