EVN1017 Introduction to risk understanding of chemicals on board ships

Course description for academic year 2024/2025

Contents and structure

The maritime legislation must ensure a fully responsible working environment and safe working conditions. The crew must therefore have knowledge of laws and regulations related to chemicals and basic theoretical understanding and competence about chemicals that are used or that occur on board. This means that they must be able to map chemicals that can lead to health hazards, carry out risk analysis and implement measures.

Main topics that are reviewed during the course:

  • Review of how chemicals are classified and labeled for health hazards
  • Introduction to the use of safety data sheets
  • Basic risk assessment of chemicals
  • Requirements for measurements of chemicals in the working atmosphere and assessment of the results
  • Preventive measures when working with chemicals
  • Review of some chemicals/chemical groups

Forskrift om arbeidsmiljø, sikkerhet og helse for de som har sitt arbeid om bord på skip form the basis of the course. The course is also linked to the Skipssikkerhetsloven and Forskrift om sikkerhetsstyringssystem for norske skip og flyttbare innretninger.

Knowledge

  • The student is familiar with the consequences for the employee's health if he is exposed to dangerous chemicals
  • The student has knowledge of how accidents can be prevented and chemical management can be carried out in a safe, secure and sustainable way
  • The student has knowledge of laws and regulations that apply to dangerous chemicals

  • The student can map and carry out a basic risk analysis for chemicals that are used or that occur in everyday work
  • The student can assess whether chemicals are managed in a responsible manner and can implement measures to prevent chemical health hazards

General competence

  • The student has insight into relevant academic and professional ethical issues
  • The student can communicate important academic subject matters such as theories, problems and solutions
  • The student can exchange opinions with professionals and participate in professional discussions and through this contribute to the development of good chemical handling
