Bachelor of Nautical Science Y-veg is an alternative route to a bachelor degree in Nautical Science for students with experience and formal competence through craft certificates from relevant positions. The three-year nautical science education is aimed towards the future occupation of deck officers and meets the requirements in STCW A-II/1 and A-II/2.

    Admission and how to apply

    Admission requirements

    All applicants for undergraduate programmes taught in Norwegian at universities and university colleges in Norway, apply through the Norwegian Universities and Colleges Admission Service (NUCAS) and must meet Norwegian and English language requirements.

    Bachelor of Nautical Science Y-veg provides insight in and knowledge of the maritime industry in regional, national and global perspectives, and contributes to safeguarding the interaction between humans, maritime technology, environment and society.

    Western Norway University of Applied Sciences (HVL) is responsible for the education meeting the requirements from the Norwegian Maritime Authority. The education is subject to the Norwegian Maritime Authority's requirements for quality assurances.

    In addition to regular subjects, the following courses are mandatory:

    • STCW Advanced Safety Training (as specified in STCW A-VI/2-1, A-VI/3 and A-VI/4-1)
    • Medical Care (STCW A-VI/4-2)
    • Maritime Radio Communication (GMDSS, STCW IV)

    Some of these courses are offered in cooperation with external companies.

    Matriculation requirements

    The general basis for admission to universities and university colleges in Norway is called Higher Education Entrance Qualification. Some study programmes have requirements in specific subjects from upper secondary school, in addition to the general requirements. In addition we require applicants to document proficiency in Norwegian and English language. See this website for more information.
