Key functions
An overview of the responsibility of different roles and functions for the systematic work with quality in the educations.
Rector
- Overall responsibility for quality assurance work for educational programmes
- Reports to the Board on quality assurance work for educational programmes
Vice-Rector for Education
- Responsible for quality assurance work for educational programmes, including learning environment and administrative processes
- Responsible for strategic development of programmes of study and programme portfolios at HVL
- Shall ensure the strategic development and quality of educational programmes in cooperation with the faculties
- Chairs the Education Committee, and is a member or chair of the Learning Environment Committee
Vice-Rector for Research
- In charge of quality assurance work for study programmes at the PhD level
- Chairs the Research and Development Committee and the central PhD Committee.
Vice-Rector for Cooperation
- Jointly responsible, with the Vice-Rector for Education, for cooperation with employers, businesses and community actors in the development of the programme portfolio at HVL
- Chairs the Cooperation Committee
Vice-Rector for the local region
- Focal point and responsible for coordinating dialogue with the local region
- Chairs the campus council for the local region
Dean
- Has the overall responsibility for quality assurance work at HVL and for the strategic development of the programme portfolio at the faculty
- Has academic and administrative responsibility for the completion of PhD programmes at the faculty
- Reports annually to the Rector on the quality assurance system at the faculty
Department management
- Responsible for the work on quality assurance at the institution and ensures that this is carried out in accordance with the quality assurance system for educational programmes at HVL
- Has the overall responsibility for the learning environment at the institute
- Reports in accordance with the faculty structure
Academic responsibility for the PhD programme
- Administrative and academic head of the PhD programme, and reports to the Dean
- Responsible for the work on the quality of the PhD programme and ensures that this is carried out in accordance with the quality assurance system for educational programmes at HVL, including special requirements for PhD programmes.
Programme coordinator at the bachelor’s and master’s levels
- The Dean determines what roles serve as programme coordinator for each programme of study at the faculty
- Heads the work on quality for the programme of study and ensures that this is carried out in accordance with the quality assurance system for educational programmes at HVL
- Coordinating responsibility for programmes of study across several campuses, as well as cooperation between campuses
- Reports in accordance with the faculty structure
Course coordinator
- The Dean determines what roles serve as course coordinator for each course at the faculty
- Heads the work on quality of courses, and ensures that this is carried out in accordance with the quality assurance system for educational programmes at HVL
- Responsible for coordinating courses with several course lecturers and cooperation between campuses
- Reports in accordance with the faculty structure
Students
- Students participate in the work on quality development of the programmes of study and learning environment as individuals, as representatives for the Student Democracy (studentdemokratiet), or as members of councils, committees or student associations
Student democracy
- Vestlandet Student Government Association is the highest student body at HVL
- The Student Government Association and HVL have entered into a cooperation agreement
- Class representatives are elected for each academic year
- The institute representatives are elected each calendar year. These individuals are responsible for dialogue with their class representatives and serve as representatives at the faculty student councils and campus student councils.
- Students are represented in councils and committees working to ensure the quality of educational programmes, in accordance with the University and University Colleges Act.
- The Student Government Association elects representatives for councils and committees at the institutional level. Faculty student councils elect representatives for councils and committees at the faculty level, including programme councils. Campus student councils elect representatives for councils and committees at the campus level.
- The Student Government Association and student councils are responsible for providing training for all student representatives.
Employees
- Employees contribute to quality development at the University by virtue of their function, or as a member of a council, committee or professional organisation.
Administrative services
- Heads of administration for units in the joint administration are responsible for quality development and quality assurance of services in their units.
- Faculty heads of administration are responsible for quality development and quality assurance of services in their faculties.
- There must be student administrative support associated with all programme councils.
Community and work life
- The community and work life contribute towards quality development of educational programmes by participating in councils and forums at various levels at HVL.
