PhD Project: Argumentative writing in Norwegian and English: A study of processes and products related to young writers’ text production within the Norwegian school context

The current PhD project explores the argumentative writing of a group of 104 10th grade students (age 14-15) when writing within the classroom context. Keystroke logging is used to compare the students’ writing fluency when writing in Norwegian vs English, taking their typing skills and English language proficiency into account. Further, keystroke data is used to explore the extent to which using the pretask planning strategy ‘focused freewriting’ (tenkeskriving) affects the argumentative writing of this group. Finally, argumentative texts are used to investigate whether applying focused freewriting affects the quality of the writing product.
