Secure Storage of Research Data (SILAF)

HVL has its own research server, SILAF, which must be used to process special categories of (sensitive) personal data. This applies to both students and staff.

Operational Status

13 February 2026 at 12:00:
SILAF is still unavailable.

Security measures have been implemented. Testing and verification of the implemented measures remain.
A new update will be provided on 16 February 2026 at 12:00.

SILAF remains unavailable.
A further update will be provided on 13 February 2026 at 12:00.

11 February 2026:
Secure Storage of Research Data (SILAF) will be unavailable from 11 February at 15:00 due to work on security measures. It is uncertain how long these measures will take.

Info

Every project evaluated as carrying sensitive data by SIKT/NSD, will be automatically assigned secure storage in HVL SILAF. See the storage guide for more information.

Security

  • Storage and processing of personal data and health research data must take place in SILAF.
  • Data should not be extracted from SILAF every time you process it.
  • SILAF is only available through HVL's own internal network or VPN-solution.
  • Multi-factor authentication (MFA) is required.
  • Each project has three-part access: read, write and access to connection keys.
  • Connection keys are stored in a separate area. Separated the other project data.
  • It is not possible to take files in or out without going through Filslusen.

Data collection with recording equipment

For data that is collected with recording equipment (sound, image, video) that is connected to the Internet, data must be transferred to SILAF immediately and deleted from the recording device within one day at the latest.

The transfer should take place using a cable (for example micro USB to USB), and never in open networks. Further processing of the data should take place in SILAF. All data on external devices (recording devices/PC, etc.) must be deleted.

Avoid using cloud services for temporary storage where possible. If you are unlucky or have to save data in a cloud service, be sure to log in to the specific cloud service and permanently delete the file from "trash" or "recently deleted".
