Project summary

There is a need for more empirical knowledge about the use of generative artificial intelligence in a Norwegian primary school context (Tjønn et al., 2024). It is also high time that Norwegian schools initiate systematic work on the introduction of AI. A broad, experimental, and exploratory approach to AI is necessary (de Vibe, 2024). This project is therefore twofold: -The project seeks to map how much students in grades 5–10 in Norway use generative AI tools (GAI) in mathematics education, which tools and for what purposes (SurveyXact). -Furthermore, the project will develop innovative teaching plans that utilize GAI to promote active, student-centered learning in line with the curriculum (LK20). Pratschke (2024) emphasizes that GAI requires a pedagogical shift from teacher-directed to student-centered learning, where the teacher is no longer the sole authority of knowledge (p. 2). The project will involve HVL employees and students in the development and testing of plans, and strengthen AI competence for both employees and students at HVL.
