Project summary

Electronic Patient Chart with AI Support for Training and Simulation in SimArena Abstract The aim of this project is to develop an electronic patient chart with integrated artificial intelligence (AI) support for use in skills training and simulation in the Bachelor of Nursing programme at Western Norway University of Applied Sciences (HVL). The system will function as a digital learning tool that replicates the core functionalities of clinical patient chart systems, including the recording of vital signs, observations, medication management, and documentation. It will be platform-independent, designed with a user-friendly and realistic interface, and capable of being populated with fictitious patient cases and AI-generated or AI-verified clinical data. During simulation activities, students will enter their own observations and interventions and receive automated feedback from the AI system to enhance learning and clinical reasoning. The project addresses the need for realistic and practice-oriented digital learning resources and responds to national expectations for improving the connection between theoretical teaching and clinical practice. Despite extensive digitalisation in the healthcare sector, paper-based charts are still used in simulation at HVL, offering limited transferability to clinical placements where documentation is digital, structured, and performed in real time. This mismatch contributes to a documented theory–practice gap and may affect students’ confidence and patient safety during clinical practice. Developing an electronic patient chart will help bridge this gap by giving students hands-on experience with digital documentation, system logic, information flow, and the tracking of clinical changes over time. The project supports HVL’s digitalisation strategy and reinforces key educational goals related to relevance, quality, and patient safety. Ultimately, the tool will enable more authentic and student-active learning and strengthen the alignment between nursing education and the digital work environments students will encounter in practice.
