Project summary

Bereaved individuals who are also facing problematic substance use represent a highly vulnerable and understudied group. These individuals experience the combined burden of substance‑related challenges and the psychological, social, and relational consequences of losing someone close. Despite the severity of these combined stressors, their needs remain insufficiently recognised in research, clinical practice, and service development. The aim of this project is to increase knowledge and understanding of grief among individuals with problematic substance use, and to initiate the development of targeted measures and service responses. The project will map needs, identify barriers to support, and generate knowledge that can inform improved interventions, screening tools, and service innovations for this group.
