HVL Computer Science PhD Program Symposium

Welcome to HVL Computer Science PhD Program Symposium 2024!

The HVL Computer Science PhD Program Symposium 2024 is a premier annual gathering that aspires to bring together Ph.D. students, postdoctoral researchers, and distinguished scholars in the field of computer science.

Hosted by the Western Norway University of Applied Sciences (HVL) at its Bergen campus, this two-day event, taking place on May 14-15, 2024, serves as a vibrant platform for presenting current research, exchanging ideas, and fostering collaborations.

The symposium aims to explore the cutting edge of computer science research including data science and artificial intelligence aming other aspects.

Through a combination of keynote presentations, poster sessions, and interactive discussions, participants will have the opportunity to delve into theoretical foundations, discuss practical challenges, and highlight innovative solutions and methodologies.

The event underscores the importance of academic discourse and aims to contribute to the advancement of the field by encouraging the sharing of knowledge, experiences, and insights among emerging scientists and established researchers.

Important Dates

Deadline for Poster Submissions: Friday 26 April 2024.

Deadline for Slides Submissions: Friday 03 May 2024.

Poster Session

The Poster Session at the HVL Computer Science Ph.D. Program Symposium 2024 is an integral part of the event, offering Ph.D. students and postdoctoral researchers a platform to present their innovative work. This segment aims to foster engaging discussions, constructive critiques, and a dynamic exchange of ideas, facilitating academic and professional growth.

Submissions must be uploaded to the designated TEAMS folder by Friday, April 26, 2024. Access to this folder will be provided to all attendees required to submit posters.

Guidelines for Poster Submission

  • Format: Submit your posters in PDF format.
  • Size: Posters must be A1 size (594 x 841 mm) and must be oriented vertically.
  • Title: Include the names of the author(s), supervisor, lab and department, as well as location and emails. If applicable, collaborator names and affiliations should also be mentioned.
  • Design: You have the freedom to choose the font, design, and color scheme. Please ensure the HVL logo is included in your design.
  • Content: Your poster should effectively communicate the following elements:
    • Objectives, Goals, and Novelty of the research.
    • Detailed Methodology, including mathematical expressions and block diagrams as needed.
    • Use Case, Case Study, Experiment, or Data Description that contextualizes your research.
    • Results that are presented clearly, with appropriate tables and figures to support the narrative and highlight significant findings.
    • Societal Impact, outlining the potential benefits or implications of your research (if applicable).
    • Acknowledgments, recognizing contributions and funding sources.

Poster Evaluation Criteria

Posters will be evaluated on both technical content and visual presentation. Awards will be given for the best poster in each category based on the following criteria:

Technical:

  1. a) Title: Must be catchy and reflect the poster's content.
  2. b) Research Objective: Should be clearly and concisely stated.
  3. c) Methodology: Must be explicitly explained, including diagrams and mathematical details where necessary.
  4. d) Novelty: The unique contribution of the research must be evident.
  5. e) Results: Should be presented in a way that is easy to interpret, with a coherent storyline and emphasis on major findings.

Visual:

  1. a) Colors: Should aid in understanding the content without causing distraction.
  2. b) Legibility: All pictures, figures, and legends must be clear (consider size, font, contrast, and quality).
  3. c) Figures: Must effectively convey results; they should be simple and focused.
  4. d) Space Usage: The poster should not be overcrowded; maintain at least 20% empty space.
