Internationalisation for PhD candidates

Western Norway University of Applied Sciences aims for all PhD candidates to have a research stay abroad of at least one month during their PhD period. An agreement for the research stay should be made between the candidate, the supervisor and the foreign host institution.

PhD candidates are encouraged to orient themselves internationally during the doctoral programme. International experience and network building can be important for later opportunities for appointment to a scientific position and for opportunities for external project funding. International experience for PhD candidates can be achieved by for instance:

  • Research stays abroad (as guest researcher or through exchange agreements)
  • Conference participation
  • Course or seminar participation
  • Participation in international research schools
  • Data collection or fieldwork
  • Publication in international journals with peer review
  • Collaboration with research groups in other countries

PhD candidates are encouraged to have a stay abroad during their doctoral education, as part of data collection or fieldwork related to the thesis, or to receive supervision and other professional follow-up at another university. A research stay abroad can also provide new impetus for the work on the thesis.
