Contents

To function as community musicians, students must have a relevant and high degree of mastery of both their principal and secondary instruments. In this course, students will work on developing their own skills as performers, as facilitators for others playing their own principal instrument and in connection with band rotations. Music technology, vocal practice, ensemble play and aural skills are important building-blocks in the development of students' music-making, and are therefore integrated into the course.

The important themes in this course are:

§ Technology for practising and training arenas

§ Instrument training with room for specialisation and breadth

§ Theory/aural skills and ensemble play

§ Band rotation

Knowledge

The candidate has:

§ Insight into repertoires for their instrument, relevant to their professional practice as a community musician

§ Knowledge of practising methods in order to best plan, implement and evaluate their own practice.

§ Knowledge of methods and instruments suitable for ensemble play

§ Knowledge of various music technology tools and their areas of use

Skills:

The candidate:

§ Can use principal and secondary instruments, as well as music technology, in a constructive and relevant manner for music communication alone and in ensemble play

§ Can use voice in an independent manner in choirs and ensemble play situations

§ Can work on and reflect on technical and artistic issues for their principal instrument, and based on this create an independent expression

§ Is able to use creative and independent working methods including improvisation in solo and ensemble play

§ Demonstrates the ability to listen, take initiative, adapt to fellow musicians and fill their space in an ensemble, musically and socially

§ Can further develop their aural skills and use music technology tools, and tie these to practical work on their principal instrument and in ensemble play

The candidate is able to:

§ Apply different working methods in connection with performance activities and demonstrate the ability to take initiative in different contexts where practising and communicating music are in focus

§ Reflect on the use of music technology in connection with practice and training

Teaching and work forms

The forms of work in the course will vary between practical creative work, lectures, project and group work, performances and supervision. Teaching will take place in groups or individually, as appropriate. Students are required to work independently on practising and studying.

Course requirements

§ Completing compulsory assignments - written and oral.

§ 80% compulsory participation in teaching
