Contents

The course is an introduction to the functions of music in culture and society. Teaching will be both practical and theoretical, and will relate to core areas of the subject teacher training programme. The goal is to locate the music subject in its cultural, didactic and societal contexts. This takes place through planning, reflections, discussions and reading relevant literature. The course will include an excursion to the Ole Bull Akademiet at Voss.

The following topics will be emphasised:

§ Didactic reflection and analysis

§ Arranging and composing

§ Music-making in relational contexts

§ Norwegian folk music, song and dance

§ Music history

§ Writing, writing processes, literature specialisation and study techniques

Practical information:

Students must anticipate expenses related to the excursion (the Ole Bull Academy costs NOK 3,000). The cost of equipment and materials is additional. ¿

Knowledge

The candidate has knowledge about:

  • Norwegian folk music and dance traditions
  • Selected topics in music history
  • Ethical musical and didactic issues
  • Writing for different purposes and target groups

 

 Skills:

 

  • Perform and lead dance and song, and play examples of Norwegian folk music
  • Reflect on their own role in various musical and didactic processes and contexts
  • Reflect verbally and in writing on sociological and cultural issues in the role as a teacher
  • Create, document and facilitate music for different arenas

 

General competence:

  • Analytically and critically assess which function music has as a societal phenomenon
  • Communicate about and reflect upon issues associated with music and musical learning
  • Initiate, organise and lead music teaching in various arenas
