Course description for academic year 2017/2018

Contents and structure

This common course comprises 2a within the practical-aesthetic subjects of physical education, music or arts and crafts. The course will alternate between single discipline, multidisciplinary and cross-disciplinary perspectives.

The common course is characterised by assignments, work methods and contents that provide experience with and knowledge of practical-aesthetic learning processes in the creation of the integrated person. Practical-aesthetic learning processes are experience-based learning processes that are linked to active, bodily, experience-oriented, relational, improvisatory, creative and exploratory strategies for holistic learning. The didactics of the subject are based on an exemplary and practical approach. Didactic themes will be linked to what the various practical-aesthetic subjects, have in common as well as to the music subject's sub-disciplines.

The music subject has these main components: Further training in performance, listening and creative activities, composing and arranging, music history topics, training in musical leadership, disciplinary didactics and introduction to various aspects of music, culture and society. The teaching will be both practical and theoretical. The course will include an excursion to the Ole Bull Akademiet at Voss. The course focuses on how students can contribute to the learning, personal growth and cultural formation in music for pupils in years 1-7.

Academic content

The following topics will be emphasised in music:

 

  • Arranging and composing
  • Music-making and creative work in interdisciplinary projects in years 1-7
  • Norwegian folk music, song and dance
  • Selected topics of music history
  • Didactics, listening methods and composing methods
  • Music notation, writing processes, literature and study techniques
  • Reflection on issues related to teaching music in years 1-7 in primary school

Practical information

Students must anticipate costs related to the excursion (the Ole Bull Akademiet costs NOK 3,000).

The candidate

  • Has knowledge of practical-aesthetic learning processes and the uniqueness of the practical-aesthetic subjects
  • Has the academic and didactic knowledge to make judgements related to teaching and learning in practical-aesthetic learning processes
  • Has knowledge about Norwegian folk music and dance traditions
  • Has knowledge about selected areas of music history
  • Can reflect on aesthetic, musical and didactic issues related to teaching in years 1-7
  • Can write and arrange music for various purposes in years 1-7
  • Has experience-based knowledge about musical projects / ensemble play for years 1-7
  • Has knowledge about curricula for music
  • Has knowledge about beginner education and progress, with emphasis on the key areas of composing and listening
  • Has experience-based knowledge about different work methods within improvisation, composition and arrangements, directed to years 1-7

 

Skills:

 The candidate will:

  • Be able to plan, lead, implement and assess different learning processes in music, with an emphasis on composition and listening in years 1-7
  • Be able to dance, play and sing examples from Norwegian folk music
  • Be able to reflect on and discuss the role of music in a diverse society
  • Be able to create their own music, score their own arrangements and adapt music for use in years 1-7
  • Be able to use their principal instrument in connection with music activities
  • Be able to lead and use song, ensemble play and dance processes for fellow students and years 1-7
  • Be able to facilitate music education and development for years 1-7, with students of various aptitudes and backgrounds

 

General competence:

The candidate will:

  • Analytically and critically assess the role of music as a societal phenomenon
  • Communicate about and reflect upon issues associated with music and musical learning in years 1-7
  • Initiate, motivate and organise music activities in years 1-7
  • Have knowledge about musical genres, composition and morphology and be able to demonstrate that they can apply music theory in connection with assignments of this type.
  • Be able to plan, implement and assess a holistic music education in line with current curricula for primary and lower secondary school, and discuss how collaborations with external bodies can strengthen the learning processes in music
  • Be able initiate disciplinary collaboration and use music both as a core subject and as a support subject in multidisciplinary thematic work and project work

Teaching and work forms

The forms of work in the course will vary between lectures, practical project and group work, literature and discussion seminars, use of online resources, supervision, music-making and independent study of the literature.
