Course description for academic year 2017/2018

Contents and structure

This course comprises in-depth study of the didactic, aesthetic and cultural characteristics of arts and crafts and is based on the academic discipline of design, arts and crafts and relates to technology and visual media as part of the subject as well as the field of arts and design.

The course looks at knowledge concepts, basic scientific theory issues, relevant methodology issues and the school subject's relation to relevant national and international research. Reflection based on theories of aesthetics, culture and learning and the student's own field work seen in relation to the subject is an important part of the course.

 

The course will focus on the following topics:

  • Basic didactic issues, curriculum theory and subject understanding
  • Art subject theory and practice, cultural theory and aesthetics
  • Strategy and methodology for creative and artistic work
  • Technology and digital learning venues in arts and crafts
  • Aesthetic production and reflection

Learning Outcome

Knowledge

  • has advanced knowledge of basic didactic issues and didactics in arts and crafts, curriculum theory and subject practice
  • has extensive knowledge of the distinctive nature of pictorial art, aesthetic objects, applied art and architecture
  • has good knowledge of the main directions in contemporary art and art theory associated with contemporary forms of expression and selected watershed moments in history
  • has extensive knowledge of art as a form of cognition and the teacher's role as a facilitator of the meeting between cultural material and creative artistic work
  • has in-depth knowledge of different aspects of scientific, artistic and aesthetic argumentation, reflection and theory development associated with arts and crafts as a discipline

  • is able to analyse academic issues based on the subject area's practice, history, traditions, distinctive nature and place in society
  • is able to evaluate and facilitate educational use of a broad range of analogue and digital tools for arts and crafts appropriate to the target audience, area of application, functionality and learning outcomes
  • is able to use strategies and methods for creative and artistic work with different approaches in their own aesthetic production
  • is able to analyse and evaluate learning processes within aesthetic production in arts and crafts and collaborate with others in such processes

General competence

The candidate

  • is able to communicate extensive independent work and masters the forms of expressions associated with the subject area
  • is able to communicate about academic issues, analyses and conclusions within the subject area, both with specialists in corresponding academic environments and with others, such as the media
  • is able to contribute to innovation and innovation processes within and across disciplines

Teaching methods

The course includes lectures and discussions, supervision, online discussions, online resources and work on portfolio projects. Subject teachers and students will collaborate at general sessions and via the Fronter learning platform.

Assessment

The examination consists of written assignments and practical portfolio work linked to the subject area, which are assessed as a whole.
