ØAA115 Innovation and Entrepreneurship

Course description for academic year 2017/2018

Contents and structure

The aim of the subject is to provide students with an understanding of the challenges involved when trying to commercialize a new product or service idea. Intra- and entrepreneurial competence encompasses analyzing and evaluating if the new idea is a good idea, if customers will buy it, if the market will respond and difficulties entering markets can be overcome, if profit can be gained and the risks be handled by appropriate countermeasures. Through writing a business plan based on own idea, the learning process contains both a practical and theoretical approach. A main objective is that the course will serve as an inspiration for further studies in innovation on master level. The course will encourage students to become more innovative both in future work and/or as an entrepreneur.

Students work in project groups writing their business plan.

Learning Outcome

Through analysis and reflections on commercialization challenges students will be able to apply and discuss relevance of theoretical models and approaches in a learning process based on new business idea.

  • Students will have acquired knowledge of main content in different kinds of business plans
  • Students will be able to conduct different kinds of analysis and reflect upon them: customer-need analysis, marked analysis, profitability analysis and risk analysis. In addition they will be able to discuss an accomplishment plan.
  • Students will be able to valuate different kinds of funding and financing of entrepreneurial ventures.
  • Students will be able to distinguish main characteristics in a written business plan compared to other written documents and reports.

  • Students will have acquired ability to assess main parts in a business plan.
  • Students will have acquired skills inn applying analysis schemata, conduct analysis and evaluate results.
  • Students will get experiences when being members of project groups.
  • Students will be able to give oral presentation in a convincing and more creative manner.

  • Being able to valuate business ideas aimed at improving existing companies and/or starting a new company (intra- and entrepreneurship).

Teaching methods

Every main topic will be given an introductory teachers presentation. Writing their business plan students participate in groups. Their group work will be aided by tutorials, oral and written feedback throughout the course. Written and oral presentation of drafts will be given feedback by fellow students and by teacher. Other means applied are videos, role-play and open discussions.

Compulsory learning activities

Written semester paper.

Mandatory assignments are valid the examination semester and 3 following semesters.

Assessment

Oral examination.

Time and place will be announced at Itslearning.

Grading scale is A-F where F is fail.
