ØKB1113 Organizational Behavior and Leadership

Course description for academic year 2017/2018

Contents and structure

Organizational Behavior has focus on the fundamental psychological processes that are important in order to understand organizations: Motivation, group processes, organizational learning, personality theory and preconditions for effective decision making. Leadership focus is on leader roles, leader behavior and different leader styles based on theory of Situational Leadership.

Learning Outcome

The student:

  • Can account for fundamental individual psychological theories on dynamic processes (motivation and emotions) and cognitive processes (perception, learning, and problem solving) that are central in understanding the life of an organization.
  • Can explain how socio-psychological processes such as forming opinions and group behavior have consequences for well-being and effectiveness in organizations.
  • Can account for various theoretical approaches to leadership.
  • Can account for leadership challenges in specific contexts, such as leadership in public institutions, change management, team leadership, etc.
  • Have knowledge about the significance of gender, ethnicity, and diversity in leading organizations.
  • Have knowledge about ethnic dilemmas in relationship to leadership.

The student:

  • Can analyze organizational cases based on knowledge and theories from different areas of the field of psychology.
  • Can offered well-founded suggestions for measures for problematic situations in organizations based on academic knowledge and analysis skills.
  • Can use various theoretical approaches t0 leadership in an organizational analysis.
  • Can justify suggestions for actions within the field of leadership.

 

The student:

  • Has acquired academic competence that enables them to question choices made concerning organizations.
  • Has acquired an academic attitude that makes them curious about various ways of analyzing organizations.
  • Has acquired an understanding of the basic complexity of organizations.

Teaching methods

Lectures and group work based on given exercises and obligatory assignments. Individual work with the material.

Compulsory learning activities

One required assignment in the course of the semester.

Assessment

Written exam, 4 hours, 100%.

Grade scale: A-F.
