MA415 Elementary Calculus

Course description for academic year 2018/2019

Contents and structure

The course is following the contents in Croft & Davison (2015), chap. 1 -6, 8-9 & 15-17

Learning Outcome

Knowledge

Knowing the characteristics of basic functions such as polynomial functions, exponential functions and trigonometric functions, could derive functions built up of these.

Use standard techniques to calculate simple specific and indefinite integrals.

Solving methods for linear and quadratic equations

Area and volume of simple geometric shapes

Skills

Could conduct a curve sketching for functions of one variable.

Could conduct vector drawing, and use this in simple geometric situations.

Locate and characterize extremity points for functions of two variables.

Perform simple modeling involving exponential functions and simple differential equations, and find solutions.

Competence

After completion of the course, students should have a necessary basis in key mathematical  methods and can use these to solve practical problems in the subject's later studies.
