EVL-RGLF115 Mathematics as a basic skill - Subject 1

Course description for academic year 2018/2019

Contents and structure

Through the course the student will have an understanding of the importance of arithmetic as a general educational competence and its interplay with the subjects in school. The student will obtain an understanding of what is meant by arithmetic as a basic skill on the various subjects' own terms. Didactic knowledge on how arithmetic can contribute to increasing the students' overall competence will be emphasised. The use of ICT as an arithmetical tool will also be focused upon.

The student will obtain an understanding of how students learn arithmetic, be able to assess the students' way of thinking and facilitate good strategy development. The student will be able to adjust the teaching to the students, and obtain knowledge on the contents of the subject of mathematics and progression in the different year groups in primary and lower secondary school.

 

In addition to teaching in guiding colleagues, the course will emphasise development of own teaching schemes, testing and reflection. Practical training will play a key role and it is necessary to have a connection to the primary and lower secondary school, so that schemes can be tested and to gain experience with guidance. 

Learning Outcome

The student

  • has teaching knowledge on quantities and numbers, numeracy and the four basic mathematical operations
  • has knowledge on strategic teaching within the four basic mathematical operations
  • has knowledge on arithmetic as a basic skill in various school subjects.
  • has knowledge on digital tools that can support teaching in arithmetic.
  • has knowledge on communication and guidance.

 

  • can plan, execute and assess teaching in various subjects and in different year groups, with a focus on how numeracy and arithmetic skills can support the students' development in these subjects.
  • can analyse and discuss learning processes.
  • can plan, give grounds for and carry out guidance of colleagues.
  • can support and challenge colleagues in the work of implementing arithmetic in various school subjects.

 

The student

  • has academic and didactic competence in planning, executing and critically assessing teaching in arithmetic for year groups 1 to 10.

Teaching methods

Online teaching in the form of lectures, discussions, reflection and solving tasks. We will use tools such as Adobe Connect and the learning platform Canvas. 

Compulsory learning activities

80% participation in online meetings. In addition, there will be participation in the discussion forum in Fronter and submission of written assignments. The study requirements will be set out in the semester plan.
