DRA307 Creative Dance

Course description for academic year 2019/2020

Contents and structure

The module focuses on learning the basic elements of creative dance, including investigative and improvisational dance processes, as well as dance didactics, dance history and theory.

The module is open for exchange students.

Investigative dance work, dance didactics, choreography and dance theory are central parts of the study. The role of teacher as organizer, supervisor/coach and collaborator is also central in this study.

Learning Outcome

At the end of the module the candidate has obtained general and basic knowledge of:

  • Dancegenres and dancehistorical traditions.
  • Dancedidactics and choreography.
  • Knowledge of the use of music applied in dancework
  • How dance connects to the fields of drama and music.

At the end of the module the student is able to:

  • Prepare, implement and evaluate a teaching plan for creative use of dance for children and young persons. 
  • Prepare and teach simple danceshapes.
  • Use knowledge of dance in drama pedagogical/didactic contexts.

At the end of the study the candidate is capable of:

  • Planning, leading and implementing creative projects for children and/or young people, including dance as part of the project.

Teaching methods

Teaching and work forms included in the course: A practical-methodical approach to creative dance, scenic communication, lectures, tutorials, student planned teaching and writing assignment.

Compulsory learning activities

A minimum of 80% attendance at teaching lessons. The student has the responsibility of own attendance and when she/he exceeds the accepted limit of absence. Accepted work requirement is valid for the following semester.

Assessment

The exam consists of:

1. Practical choreographic exam, planned and presented as groupwork, followed by the group in conversation/dialogue on the choices made in and for the presentation.  

The practical exam is organized in one (1) day. The examtask is given two (2) weeks before examdate.

Criteria of assessment: 

  • The group's choreographic plan as a whole
  • The artistic qualities of the choreographic plan
  • Interaction within the group
  • The didactic potential iin the presentation.  

2. An individually written paper, reflecting on the didactic and artistic potential in groupwork. The paper should have a volume of ap. 800 words.

The task is given two (2) weeks before the exam. The paper is presented no later than two (2) days before the practical group exam.

Criteria of assessment:

  • The candidate's ability to reflect on her/his own learning
  • The candidate's ability to reflect on didactic and artistic potential in the practical examwork

 

One (1) grade/mark will be given for the exam. The two parts are weighted as follows:

  • Part 1 - in groupwork/grademark counts: 90%
  • Part 2 - in individual paper/grademark counts: 10%

Time and space for the exam is announced on Studentweb.

Evalutaion scale: A - F, F being - not passed -

New/postponed exam will be an individual exam, arranged in agreement with course coordinator.
