Course description for academic year 2019/2020
Contents and structure
Further education will provide an introduction to the function as a nurse offshore and in maritime environments. The program is built on the regulations for health, environment and safety in the petroleum industry, the maritime regulations and the Working Environment Act and its regulations. The further education for nurses offshore aims to educate reflective and qualified offshore nurses using knowledge and clinical competence to obtain the offshore and the marine staff Health. The function an offshore nurse has includes practice nursing related to medical emergency response and preventive health care, as well as to safeguard the work environment offshore and the marine environment. The program is based on communities and offshore / marine companies who need specially trained staff, with requirements related to health challenges in arctic and tropical areas.
The study is carried out as a collection based part-time study over one academic year.

- Has advanced knowledge of reactions relating to patients, relatives and staff in acute and critical disease and injury.
- Has knowledge of responsibilities related to various actors in the field of emergency, included the roles and tasks related to planning and handling of incidents.

- Can explain regulations, quality systems, quality management and related issues.
- Can explain problem solving processes, tools and methods in the field of Systematic HSE work
- Is familiar with the offshore conditions related to organization and how the different actors cooperate, including emergency management and handling the media during an accident and a critical situation.
- Knows relevant regulations about food and water hygiene and the prevention of communicable diseases.

- Can plan mental health emergency, related to staff and the people who are affected by crisis and accidents.

- Can perform risk assessments and report various environment problems in the field of work.
- Can apply various problem solving processes and methods within Systematic HSE work.

General competitions:
The student:
- Knows the area of responsibility for offshore working nurses related to acute medical care, infection control, food and drinking water hygiene, the work environment in health promotion and in terms of safety and emergency response.
- Can apply relevant subjects -and ethical issues like anonymity issues, relations between management and employee and environmental considerations.
- Shows understanding of emergency response thinking in general, and planning processes and handling phase especially.
- Can contribute to academic discussion around emergency response related requirements and challenges.
- Can reflect on their professional practice related to the management of accident -and crisis, individually and in groups, and adjust this under guidance.
Assessment (exam forms): Project counts 50%, Exam 50%.

In addition it is expected that each student spends time in self-study the compulsory literature. The Course Schedule shows the relevant literature for various combinations.

Public approved Nurse with Authorisation.
Recommended previous knowledge
Former education within nursing and clinical practice within the field.
