MAS101 3D Modeling and Finite Element Method

Course description for academic year 2020/2021

Contents and structure

Computer Aided Design is the term given to producing computer-based models of engineering mechanisms and machines. It enables one to view a potential design in 3D on a computer. It is, essentially, a design tool.

The Finite Element Method (FEM) is the method that numerically solves the field equations of material deformation. It is used extensively in all branches of mechanical engineering. This method enables one to take a 3D object made in a CAD tool and study how it behaves. It is, essentially, an analytical tool.

Learning Outcome

In this course, students will learn both of the aforementioned computational tools - CAD and FEM - for analysis and design.

Students will:

  • learn how to produce machine drawings and perform strength calculations.
  • gain in-depth knowledge of how the models in a modern 3D design tool is built .
  • gain knowledge of how customer requirements , production requirements and design requirements affecting the structure of the models.
  • gain knowledge of basic 2D drafting rules , processing symbols , sections and relevant standards .
  • learn thus environmentally friendly production methods and link them to the 3D modeling process.

Running Log

Student will learn significant computer packages throughout the semester: Creo / Parametric, Creo / Simulate, Abaqus and ANSYS .

Additional Skills

Students will learn how to apply the principles of appropriate structure of parties and assemblies. using modern 3D design tool to build models using parties and assemblies. produce 2D drawings in accordance with applicable regulations. change and modify the parties , assemblies, and drawings. Strength Calculating machine elements with FEM Animation of mechanisms. Reflecting on their professional practice, working with project groups
