ELDHELS002 Disease/Illness Among the Elderly and Teamwork
Course description for academic year 2020/2021
Contents and structure
The course will focus attention on challenges related to the complexity in the elderly¿s pathological picture, both physical and mental, and provide the students comprehensive knowledge in interdisciplinary geriatrics. The most common physical and mental illnesses are accentuated. Furthermore, the course will focus on individuality, use of resources, user participation and the need of interdisciplinary collaboration and coordination between different service levels, both in terms of assessment, diagnosing, course of action and follow-up.

Learning Outcome
Knowledge
The candidate:
- has exhaustive knowledge about the complexity in the elderly¿s physical and mental pathological picture and the challanges this poses on the health services to ill elders
- has exhaustive knowledge about central regulations that form the basis of changeovers and modifications in health and social care for the elderly
Skills
The candidate:
- is able to systematically map, critically assess and implement personalised treatment and care to ill elders, maintaining their resources/wants and promoting health
- is able to interact with the primary and special health care units; in order for the patient to experience a coherent and integrated service provision
- is able to express problems for discussion derived from one's own subject area
- is able to carry out systematic literature searches and practise criticism of the sources
General Competence
The candidate:
- is able to analyse, assess and communicate relevant professions as well as legal and work ethical challenges concerning ill elders

Teaching methods
Lectures, dialogue, self-tuition, teamwork, observation practice at appointed workplace and oral presentation of assignment
The course is based on one-week workshops and requiring a considerable effort between the meetings
Compulsory learning activities
80 % turnout for instruction
1 requirement - observation practice followed by a written assignment ( 2000 words) about a clinical problem
