PL417 Land Use Planning

Course description for academic year 2022/2023

Contents and structure

An introduction to municipal planning with emphasis on land use planning according to the Planning and building Act and  environmentally sound principles for development in rural areas with small towns. Political aims and conflicting interests, Law and methods for physical planning.

Learning Outcome

Knowledge

Students know about:

  • key issues in land use planning and challenges associated with planning for sustainable development
  • the role and tasks of municipalities in the management system
  • the Planning and building Act: the planning system, requirements of planning processes and content

Skills

Students are able to:

  • prepare information for land use plans.
  • make Environmental assessment analyses and Risk and vulnerability analyses for nature hazards.

General competence

Students are able to:

  • understand and make use of municipal land use plans.
  • participate in planning processes.

Entry requirements

No formal prerequisites. 

Recommended previous knowledge

GE-413 Cartography and Geographical Information Systems and/or PL-416 Landscape analysis is recommended. 

Teaching methods

Lectures and exercises.

Project work in groups.

Compulsory learning activities

1. Individual work for about two week. After lecture you can collect information about municipality plan and do a  ROS-analysis

2. Project work in groups for 4-5 days: Environmental assessment analyses and Risk and vulnerability analyses for nature hazards for a part of a municipality.

Both coursework requirements must be approved in order to take the exam. 

Assessment

Home examination, 4 hours.

Grading: A-F.
