ADA504 Research in Applied Computer Science and Engineering

Course description for academic year 2023/2024

Contents and structure

Research in applied computer science and engineering is a cross-disciplinary activity applying computer science techniques, methods, and tools for problem-solving within one or more application domains. Candidates that are to undertake a master thesis project in computer science and engineering must therefore have the ability to plan a research project based on state-of-the-art in applied computer science and which advances the frontier of knowledge in both computer science and in the application domain.

The course introduces research methods in computer science specifically targeting applied computer science in and cross-disciplinary research context. The candidates will iteratively develop a research proposal which will include literature review, hypothesis and research questions and project plan, and which will serve as a basis the master thesis project to be undertaken.

Learning Outcome

Knowledge

The student…

  • can describe the research field as a scientific discipline combining applied computer science and engineering
  • can relate and describe the main research methods within applied computer science, natural science and engineering
  • can explain scientific work practice and research ethical guidelines pertinent to computer science and engineering research

Skills

The student…

  • can develop and formulate research questions and hypothesis in computer science and engineering research
  • can describe and apply design science as a research method for interdisiplinary and applied research projects
  • can search and identify research literature of relevance for research questions within computer science and engineering
  • can apply established practice for scientific writing in computer science and engineering

General competency

The student…

  • can identify scientific venues and channels of relevance for computer science and engineering research
  • can develop and plan smaller research projects within computer science and engineering
  • has knowledge of the requirements for conducting research in accordance with established norms and scholarly integrity

Entry requirements

None

Teaching methods

Lectures, workshops, and individual supervision in relation to the development of the research proposal

Compulsory learning activities

Hand-in draft versions of master thesis research project proposal.

Assessment

Portfolio

The assessment is based om an iterative development of a master thesis research proposal. A number of preliminary versions of the research proposal must be handed in and be approved. The grade will be based on the submitted final version of the research proposal.

Pass/fail.
