NABP3004 Vessel management - Cargo Handling

Course description for academic year 2023/2024

Contents and structure

Course content:

  • General introduction to load handling on different types of ships
  • Introduction to use of maritime regulations related to cargo handling
  • Mandatory simulator training on cargo and tank simulator
  • Physical properties of oil gas and chemicals:
  • Tankers (Oil & Chemical tankers) and other ships (gas tankser & OSVs) for carrying liquid cargoes in bulk
  • Safety culture and management on tankers
  • Identification of operational hazards and risks on board:
  • Risk mitigation measures and management on board tankers:
  • Purging and gas-freeing Hazards and emergencies on board
  • Other safety training

The course covers relevant IMO requirements stated in STCW 78 as amended, found in tabell A-II/1 and A-II/2.

The course includes a gas measurement course that, upon passing a test in gas measurement, give the students a certificate in gas measurement.

In combination with other subjects in this study, this subject leads to the theoretical basis for the students to apply to the Norwegian Maritime Administration for the "Basic Tankerman Certificate for Oil, Gas and Chemical".

Learning Outcome

Knowledge:

The student

  • Has knowledge of regulations, central topics, theories, issues, tools and methods within cargo handling.
  • Is familiar with research and studies relevant to cargo handling on board ships.
  • Can update his/her knowledge of cargo and cargo handling.
  • Has knowledge of the shipping of cargo at sea and the subject's development, history, traditions, uniqueness and place in society, including also in the green shift in the maritime industry.
  • Can explain the general characteristics of cooled, frozen and hygroscopic cargo, dry cargo, bulk cargo and liquid cargo
  • Can explain how the inspection and control of goods and holds in general should be carried out
  • Can describe how the principles for guarding should take place

Skills:

The student

  • Can make reasoned choices based on professional knowledge and relevant results from research and development work within cargo handling on ships.
  • Can find, evaluate and refer to information and use this in relevant issues related to loading, unloading and shipping of cargo at sea.
  • Can handle relevant professional tools, techniques and terminology.
  • Can reflect on own practice and adjust this under guidance.
  • Can reflect on key topics within loading operations on board ships in a sustainability perspective and the role of maritime freight transport in the maritime industry's ongoing green shift.
  • Can plan and create a general loading plan for a vessel
  • Can interpret and use information from a vessel's deadweight scale, capacity plan and ballast tank plan

General competence:

The student

  • Can convey central subject matter such as theories, problems and solutions in writing and orally.
  • Can exchange views related to the planning and execution of loading operations and the transport of cargo on ships with others within the maritime field and contribute to the development of practice.
  • Can plan and carry out tasks and projects within relevant regulations, ethical requirements and guidelines.

Teaching methods

Lectures, case work, self studies, simulator exercises. Use of information of/from vessel the has had their practise periods.

Compulsory learning activities

2 of 3 compulsory tests must be approved.

Assessment

Written exam, 4t. May be conducted digitally.
