SYKF300 Nursing under Comorbid States of Disease and Patient Health Conditions

Course description for academic year 2023/2024

Contents and structure

The content of this subject refers to nursing patients with complex and precarious patient conditions or illnesses in the community health services. The theme provides a theoretical basis for understanding and knowledge about health challenges and treatments from the perspective of the nurse’s role in health promotion, prevention, treatment, rehabilitation and relief.

In addition, the subject covers the following themes:  

  • When reduced functionality affects life and health
  • Courses of treatment
  • Methods to increase user participation
  • Technology and health
  • Substance abuse and addiction
  • Violence, abuse and negligent care  
  • Socioeconomic problems
  • Current regulations and guidelines and relevant public documents
  • Multi disciplinary, interprofessional and cross-sectoral collaboration

Knowledge:

The student…

  • has extensive knowledge about the aging process and the particular needs of the elderly population
  • has extensive knowledge on how to provide nursing services to patients with complex and precarious conditions or illnesses
  • has knowledge about substance abuse and addiction
  • has knowledge about methods on how to increase user participation, as individuals or within an organized system
  • has knowledge about patient safety and the qualities of our health services
  • has knowledge about relevant risk factors and the principles and measures necessary to prevent harm to patients
  • has knowledge about technology and digital solutions

can apply professional knowledge and relevant results from research and development to theoretical problems, and justify choices according to knowledge based practice.

General Competence:

  • is familiar with social problems and health related issues included neglect, violence, substance abuse, addiction and socio-economics problems and is capable of identifying these and to offer follow up to persons exposed to these challenges and take necessary steps to implement measures and/or treatments required, or refer cases to the relevant authorities

Compulsory learning activities

The following compulsory learning activities must be completed before students can sit the final examination
1: Participation in study groups with tutoring and peer feedback. Topics: Technology, health and user participation.
2: Participation in study groups with tutoring and peer feedback. Topics: Violence, substance abuse and addiction.

Compulsory learning activities are valid for four semesters. Regarding absence from compulsory learning activities the same rules are applied as regarding absence from practical training, cf. Regulations relating to Programmes of Study and Examination at the Western Norway University of Applied Sciences.

Assessment

Individual written thesis over 3 days. Extent: 3000 words +/- 10%.
The deadline and delivery method for this exam will be published on Studentweb.

Assessment grading
Graded using a scale from A to F, where A to E are passing grades and F is a fail.

New exam will be conducted in the same way the ordinary exams.
