SYKF230P Practice Study, Surgical Nursing in Acute, Chronic and Critical Disease

Course description for academic year 2023/2024

Contents and structure

This module is a supervised clinical placement with a focus on the practice of patient-centred nursing for people with acute, chronic and critical illnesses within surgery. Students use the nursing process in their nursing practice, with a specific focus on treatment, rehabilitation and pain relief in interaction with patients, relatives and other health professionals.

This module can include paediatrics, pregnancy and maternity care. This module also covers the following topics:

  • Nursing procedures related to acute, chronic and critical illness
  • Documentation and journal systems
  • Drug handling and calculation

SYK220P and SYK230P each have an expected study time of 405 hours, and the total for both modules is 810 hours. Throughout this module, students will have 540 hours of direct patient-facing work. It is expected progression from the first to the second clinical placement course (SYK220P and SYK230P).

90% attendance is required in the clinical placement.

Upon module completion, students will have attained the following total learning outcomes, divided into knowledge, skills and general competence.

Knowledge:

  • will have knowledge of technology and digital solutions in the health service

Skills:The student...

  • will be able to use subject knowledge of health and illness of people with acute, chronic and critical illnesses to systematically observe, assess, implement and document appropriate nursing measures, as well as evaluate the effect of these and make adjustments as necessary
  • will be able to use their knowledge to implement measures in case of subacute and acute events, as well as practice cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
  • will be able to use knowledge of the needs of children and young people in treatment and/or services, and will be able to ensure their participation and rights, both as patients and as relatives
  • will be able to use interpersonal and communicative competence when meeting with patients and relatives
  • will be able to use technology and digital solutions to support the resources, coping and participation of patients and relatives
  • will be able to reflect on professional, ethical and legal issues in line with relevant legislation and guidelines, and adjust their practice in the course of their provision of services
  • will be able to reflect on ethical and legal problems through the use of technology and digital solutions
  • will be able to identify and evaluate individual and system level risk factors , as well as documenting these and conducting systematic follow ups
  • will have mastered the use of relevant technical medical equipment
  • will have mastered how to implement infection control measures to prevent the spread of unwanted microbes
  • will have mastered mapping, assessment and documentation tools in their nursing practice
  • will be able to participate in targeted collaboration processes with patients, relatives and other health professionals

General competence:

The student...

  • will be able to manage their own work and prioritise nursing tasks
  • will be familiar with quality indicators and standard terminology used in nursing documentation
  • will be able to plan and implement acute, chronic and critical illness nursing, and implement nursing for patients in palliative care
  • will be able to plan and implement the safe handling and calculation of medication, and quality assure the individual patient’s use of medication
  • will be able to plan and implement communication and interaction with patients and relatives based on respect, cooperation and integrity
  • will be able to plan and implement nursing for pre- and postoperative patients
  • will be able to plan and implement independent assessments of nursing requirements for patients with indigenous and minority backgrounds
  • will be able to participate in the planning and implementation of measures to ensure the safe transfer of patients between different units and levels of the health service
  • will be able to convey, both orally and in writing, subject knowledge and relevant results from research and development work covering theoretical and practical issues, and will be able to justify choices in line with knowledge-based practice
  • will be able to convey opinions and share experiences with others in the field, both orally and in writing, and through this contribute to the development of best practice

Entry requirements

SYK100, SYK130, SYK140, SYK120P

When this is the second clinical placement in Year 2 of this study programme it is required that either SYK220P or SYK330P is passed. When this is the third clinical placement in Year 2 of this study programme it is required that SYK220P and SYK330P is passed.

Compulsory learning activities

The following compulsory learning activities must be completed before graduates can begin direct patient-facing work: 

1: Compulsory participation in teaching that is related to practice preparation, skills training and simulation. 90% participation is a requirement. 

2: Individual written drug calculation test (must be 100% correct). 

Completed coursework is valid for four semesters. In the case of absence from cumpulsory learning activities, the same rules apply as for absence during practical training according to the regulations relating to programmes of study and examinations at Western Norway University of Applied Sciences.

Assessment

Clinical placements are assessed on a pass/fail basis after a final assessment of the candidate’s performance during their clinical placement. To pass their placements, students must have reached the learning outcomes of the module and met the requirement of 90% participation in the clinical placement.

Resitting placements: A student who does not pass their placement will be moved down a year, and their individual education plan will be adjusted.
