SYKH250 Public Health in a National and Global Perspective

Course description for academic year 2023/2024

Contents and structure

This module provides broad knowledge, skills and general competence in health-promoting and preventive work from both a national and a global public health perspective. Furthermore this module will contribute to increased insight into key concepts and topics within global health, internationalisation, the UN's sustainability goals and human rights. This module’s practical work is an in-depth study of public health work. 

This module can include paediatrics, pregnancy and maternity care. 

Learning Outcome

Upon module completion, students will have attained the following total learning outcomes, divided into knowledge, skills and general competence.

Knowledge

The student...

  • will have a broad knowledge of the health-promoting and preventative functions of nursing from a public health perspective
  • will have knowledge of the relevant teaching and guidance methods
  • will have knowledge of inclusion, equality and non-discrimination regardless of gender, ethnicity, religion and belief, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression and age, so that graduates can contribute to equal services for all groups within society
  • will have knowledge of health and social policy within the field of public health, including relevant regulatory requirements

Skills

The student...

  • will be able to use subject knowledge and relevant results from research and development work covering theoretical and practical issues, and make choices in line with knowledge based practical experience
  • will be able to use cultural knowledge and understanding in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing from a public health perspective
  • will be able to talk with children about themes of neglect, violence and abuse
  • will be able to use knowledge of the needs of children and young people in a public health perspective and ensure their participation and knowledge of their rights
  • will be able to use knowledge of education, mastering and change processes in supervision and teaching from a public health perspective
  • will be able to use interpersonal, communication and supervisory knowledge in public health work
  • will be able to use up-to-date knowledge of the health and welfare system, laws, regulations and guidance documents within public health work in their provision of services
  • will be able to use subject knowledge of health and illness in public health work to systematically observe, assess, implement and document appropriate nursing measures, as well as evaluate the effect of these and make adjustments as necessary
  • will be able to use knowledge to implement measures to promote good mental health
  • will be able to use knowledge of health-promoting, preventative and work-inclusive measures

Compulsory learning activities

The following coursework must be completed before students can sit the final examination:

1: Participation in study groups, including the presentation of a draft project plan, peer feedback and guidance

2: An approved project plan

3: Seminar days covering the central themes of this module

Compulsory learning activities are valid for four semesters. In the case of absence from cumpulsory learning activities, the same rules apply as for absence during practical training according to the regulations relating to programmes of study and examinations at Western Norway University of Applied Sciences.

Assessment

The exam is made up of two parts, and students must pass both.

Part 1: 160 hours related to direct patient and service user facing work. To pass their placements, students must have reached their learning outcomes and met the requirement of 90% participation in the course.

Part 2: Project work, done individually or in a group, length 3500 words +/- 10%.   The deadline and delivery method for this project will be published on Studentweb.

Assessment grading:Pass/fail.

Resitting examinations:If a student fails one of their exams, it must be taken again.

If a student does not pass part 1, a new placement will be conducted with the next year group.

If a student does not pass part 2, they can submit an improved version of their project work. Students are entitled to new supervision.
